Andy BLACK: The Shadow Side [Review&Discussion]

“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” – Plato

I bought this album, and this post is 100% my opinion. This is not a sponsored post.

On Friday May 6th 2016, Andy Biersack the frontman of rock band Black Veil Brides released his first solo record. I’m a long term fan, so all of the content he produces means a lot to me. Anyway, let’s get into it~

Homecoming King: 3.5/5 hearts

I like the meaning behind it, on the Andy Black YouTube channel, Andy says the song is about the cool kids from high school. They were popular as teenagers, but life doesn’t always work out for them. A lot of this song is imagery such as, “Here comes the invisible man” which is referring to himself, or at least that’s what I believe. However, I knocked off 1.5 points because it was hard to follow the song until I looked up the lyrics. His voice was clear, but the story was hard to comprehend until I read it.

We Don’t Have to Dance: 5/5 hearts

It’s catchy, relatable, what’s not to love? I literally listened to this song for days on repeat, and even got a few friends addicted to it.

Ribcage: 3.5 hearts

I like the melody and rhythm of this song! It’s the lyrics again that have me knocking hearts off. “Nothing in the cage of my ribecage” confused me. Aside from that, I really enjoyed this song, it was meant to be a dance song. While it’s not the usual music I jam to, I can rock out to this! On a side note, “Ribcage” is lowkey referencing the time he jumped off of stage a broke his ribs. Ouch.

Stay Alive: 2 hearts

This is just one of those songs that I had to force myself to finish. I think the meaning behind it is inspiring, but the song was just not my cup of tea.

Love Was Made to Break: 5 hearts

I like this song because it’s about friendships drifting apart, which I find is huge motif in my life. I think anyone who moves around a lot can relate to this song. It’s very calming, and I hear strings (like the violin) being utilized, and I’m trash for music like that.

Beautiful Pain: 5 hearts

This song is about Andy’s friend who passed away; the memories of that person are happy, but it’s bittersweet because he’s no longer there. I like songs like this, I think they are the most authentic because they are born from happiness and sadness. The song uses lots of piano, which I find adds the perfect amount of zest to the melody.

Put the Gun Down: 5 hearts

The perfect burnt out song anthem. There is a time in everyone’s life when they just want to give up: a career, a relationship, or just everything. I’m not the type of person who would commit suicide, but on the days when I’m down I find happiness songs like this one. It’s the feeling of not being alone, ya know? 10/10 🙂

Drown Me Out: 4.5 hearts

I definitely love the beat of this song! I also love the meaning behind it, while the last song was about lows, this song is about not giving up! “Nothing’s gonna drown me out!” I did not, however, like the monotone/speaking voice when he says “Feeling the violent rage, washing over me, etc” that part makes me cringe a little bit, but only enough to make me knock off .5 points.

Paint it Black: 5 hearts

This song is about the lovely Juliet Simms (Biersack)! I love her, but if you’re new to Black Veil Brides and Andy, you wouldn’t know about how much hate she gets. Many people dislike her just because she is married to Andy. I read that many people dislike this song because it’s too “negative” as it focuses on their fights. While I believe music can be interpreted in many different ways, I have my own opinion behind this song. This song is about forgiveness, and letting go of your pride because you love each other. “Every time I lose a fight, and I’m dying to be right, I just paint it black” means that he’ll get over it, because of love.

Break Your Halo: 5 hearts

I like the rhythm of this song, and the melody is nice too. The song is easy to follow, it’s about calling people out on their BS. I think this song is pretty straight forward.

Louder Than Your Love: 5 hearts

I don’t really have much to say about this song either. It’s solid, has a good rhythm, is catchy, I can’t find any flaws about it.

Broken Pieces: 4 hearts

I liked the chorus of this song, it’s sparkling. I know that’s a weird way to describe something intangible, but that’s the feeling I get when I hear this song. Although, I also felt like I was hearing a country song. I have nothing against country, it just threw me off. So I deducted 1 point.

The Void: 4.5 hearts

This was more a ballad, and I have trouble getting through slow songs. It’s saving grace was the use of string instruments, I swear I heard some violin in there. Like I said, I am total trash for that kind of music.

Overall Rating: 4.3 hearts!

green-heart FINAL THOUGHTS

I liked this record! I wrote this article to combat the annoying people on Tumblr who called it a flop. Failure is defined by the person, and think this album was a success. It was something new from Andy, and I think it’s healthy to try new things. But I am sad that They Don’t Need to Understand wasn’t featured, it’s one of my favorites!

On every album that comes out, you aren’t going to like every song. There were a few on this record that I wasn’t super hot about, but I’m sure there is someone out there who loves it. And I’m sure each and every song is treasured by Andy.

Let me know what you guys thought of it! Or if you have never heard of Andy Biersack before this, did I spark your interest? Leave a comment down below!

Disclaimer: do NOT spew blind hate in my comment section. I don’t care if you don’t like Andy, Juliet, or Black Veil Brides, but be RESPECTFUL about it. I have absolutely no problem deleting you.

    1. I’m also a fan of Andy, but I don’t have to like everything he produces or puts his name on. The lyrics of BVB are of a higher quality then his solo record; the problem with the lyrics of this particular album is that they make more sense on paper than they do in song. When I was listening to the songs, some of them didn’t make sense as a whole. Whereas when I was reading them I understood the meaning a lot more. That’s all I was trying to say in the article….
